Do you think that people with bi-polar disorder are disabled? This is not a trolling question, just something I have been thinking about since I clicked yes on a job application since I am diagnosed with the disorder.

That is an excellent question and unfortunately I don’t know the answer to it.
I also have bipolar disorder so this would be helpful for me to know.

Does anyone know??

Yes. Bi-polar disorder and other mental illnesses are a disability.

It is typically not wise to disclose one’s disability on a job application unless the disability OVERTLY impacts your ability to perform the job. Typically this is more reflecting the persons physical ability to do the job. Even so, I would not disclose job performance issues related to my disability unless it was brought up by the employer. And even then, you always want to spin it in a positive way. For example you might respond to a interview question about an overt impairment like, “my whatever-issue is well controlled and/or easily accommodated and I am excited to start working for you and here’s a detailed example of the awesome work I can do.”

You are not required to disclose a disability (though some are more apparent than others) and there are questions about disability-status that are illegal to ask and fairly easily re-directed with strong interview techniques.

Applications ask about disability status often because for people receiving SSDI or other assistance and trying to work, the employer gets a tax credit.

This is extremely helpful.
Thank you for your input!!
